For this project we went to locations, taking pictures and drawing landscapes and objects that we found along the coastline. We started with a trip to Weston-super-Mare beach looking at the old pier and marine lake in particular, although interesting I found it hard to get inspired and creative here as I live in Weston I see these sights on a regular basis and found it hard to apply and sort of drawing skill to them. We then went back to the studio and had a tutorial on mark making with a range of different materials and tools, this really helped me to find a starting point to start drawing from and I didn't feel so confined to pencil and paper. Along with this we also experimented with bling portraits, this showed me how broad drawing can be and it doesn't necessarily need to look exact to what you're replicating.

I began by taking pictures from my recent holiday and creating a range of small drawings. Although I struggled in the first half of this week after this tutorial and a trip to the harbour in Bristol really helped me to look further and apply different styles to my work.

I then took inspiration from artists such as Shaun Kardinal to create some outcomes.

After this experimenting i decided to stick with one image and develop it further.

This first project on the UAL has shown me the many different varieties of work that can be created.
Overall I have enjoyed these initial weeks as I have become more comfortable with drawings and learnt that it is more than pencil and paper as you can use any medium or tool to create a picture. I am now looking forward to starting my first option in visual communication and applying these skills to that area.
First Life Drawing:
For my first session of life drawing I used both charcoal and ink, this is the first time that I have ever had the chance to draw the human body and I did struggle with proportion which is something I hope to improve upon throughout the year.

Background and Shadow:
In this session we used watered down ink to create backgrounds and shadows within our drawings. I am still struggling with translating the human body to paper but I feel that I am already beginning to improve.

Colour:
In this session I used colour within my drawings. I feel that my second drawing is more successful than the first just due to the scale enhancing the image. The colour is something that I had not yet explored but I feel that it has come out successful and pulls the image together.

Collage:
Here I used an image of a person posing and collaged around them and added stitch. This is something that wasn't particularly planned it was more just to do what I felt worked at the time and go with it but I feel that it has come out very successful.

Digital:
This is my first ever session of digital life drawing. I found it easier to use a mouse to draw as you have any colour or style of tool to choose from and any mistakes are easily rectified. I am extremely pleased with the final outcome due to the composition and different layers used.

Full Life Drawing:
This was done in a long morning session with Mario's guidance i was able to fix my bad habits and was able to draw the body to scale and add the light and shadow making the final outcome the one I feel is best to date. I feel like I have vastly improved compared to when I first started and I now have a greater understanding of life drawing and how it is done.

For the first week of our course we have had inductions which have shown us what to expect from the following year and outcomes we will achieve.
Learning about the coming months has been exciting as we have been shown the wide varieties of equipment that are there for us to use during our time on the course.
I am looking forward to the coming weeks of starting our three week project and getting back into art after the summer.
